Discover Buford

Historic character. Modern convenience. Weekends by the water.

Buford offers more than one way to experience life in Metro Atlanta. Discover restaurants and galleries downtown, spend an afternoon shopping at Mall of Georgia, or head toward Lake Lanier for a change of scenery. Its appeal lies in that variety: a place where local history, entertainment, and outdoor recreation come together.

A Downtown With Character

Historic downtown Buford brings new energy to turn-of-the-century buildings through restaurants, shops, and galleries. It’s a setting that invites you to make an evening of dinner or spend an afternoon discovering local businesses. The city’s creative side adds another dimension to its identity, giving Buford a story that extends well beyond its shopping destinations.

At the Buford Community Center, the Sylvia Beard Theatre hosts live performances in an intimate indoor setting, while the Town Park Amphitheatre provides space for outdoor concerts and events. The Buford Museum, also located at the center, offers a closer look at the community’s past.

Parks, Trails & Lake Days

Bogan Park is a major recreation destination in the Buford area. Its 83 acres include playgrounds, a baseball and softball complex, basketball courts, sand volleyball courts, and two miles of trails. An indoor aquatic center with competition and leisure pools, a double gymnasium, and a community recreation center bring activities indoors, too.

Near Mall of Georgia, the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center offers a different pace. Set on 233 wooded acres, it combines educational exhibits, five miles of walking trails, and the historic Chesser-Williams House. It’s a place to explore nature and local history without planning a full getaway.

For time closer to the water, the surrounding Lake Lanier area includes destinations such as Buford Dam Park and Lanier Park. Within the city, Main Street Park and Amphitheater, Community Center Town Park, and the Garnett Street Walking Trail add more options for enjoying time outside.

Shopping & Dining, From Local to Large-Scale

Mall of Georgia anchors the broader Buford shopping scene with more than 185 stores and restaurants, plus moviegoing and entertainment options. It offers a distinctly different experience from historic downtown’s smaller shops and galleries—giving residents options for both a full shopping day and a more leisurely local outing.

Schools, Academic Opportunities & Championship Athletics

Buford High School combines college-preparatory opportunities with a well-established athletic identity. Its published 2025 AP Honor School recognitions include Humanities, Humanities Achievement, STEM, STEM Achievement, and Schools of Distinction. Those distinctions recognize access to and performance in college-level coursework.

The Buford Wolves won the 2021 GHSA Class 6A football state championship and the 2025 Class 6A fast-pitch softball state championship. These accomplishments show a championship tradition that extends beyond Friday-night football.

Buford High belongs to Buford City Schools, a separate district from GCPS. Residence within its school zone must be verified; a Buford mailing address alone does not establish eligibility. Out-of-district enrollment requires district acceptance.

For properties assigned to Seckinger High School, the school’s AI theme adds a technology-focused educational direction. Its district profile lists 2026 AP Honor School recognition in six categories and reports four athletic state championships across its first four years, alongside region titles and college signees.

Other schools to investigate for a specific property include Mill Creek High School in Hoschton and Mountain View High School in Lawrenceville. Mill Creek offers its STEM-certified EPIC program and won the 2022 Class 7A football state championship. Mountain View offers AP, dual enrollment, and the SUMMIT STEM and leadership program; its district profile reports 15 varsity teams reaching postseason play during 2025–26. These are separate attendance zones, so start with the home’s exact address.
